Winter Wonderland In Yellowstone National Park

Winter Wonderland In Yellowstone National Park copyright Gale Rainwater

We don’t get much snow in my home state of Arkansas. If we do it’s usually only an inch or two and melts off very quickly. So I was very pleased to wake up one morning to this beautiful snow fall in Yellowstone National Park. There was about 6 inches in he higher elevations. I made the trip to Grand Teton National Park to photograph fall color and when I got there this front moved in and covered the teton mountain range for about four days. I traveled north into Yellowstone for the snow it was around Oct 1st, 2007,  so not winter time at all. By the way this is not a black and white photograph this is color, just the colors of a cold snowy day. Someday I hope to go to Yellowstone in the actual winter time to photograph the landscpape and wildlife. If you enjoy my photography please let me know by commenting or voting on my blog. I would greatly appreciate it.

    Wonderful photos! I have been to many of the places you show, including Grand Teton and Yellowstone (back in 1975). I’ll never forget the sight of a moose running effortlessly through about 4 feet of snow, or of an elk standing in a stream with deep snowbanks all around.

    I am in Southern Arizona right now (but return to St. Louis tomorrow), and took some pictures of the Catalina Mountains yesterday (when my older son would let me have my camera- anyway, he has a better eye than I do). I post my photos at Flickr under Bashkin001, but they don’t compare to yours (by lightyears). Some are documentary in nature- I figure better to have so-so pictures of some events than no pictures at all.

    Happy new year! This is a new technorati FAVE for me. Jim

    Wow! I got to visit Yellowstone two winters ago (chasing a bird, the Siberian Accentor) and it looked just like this. I still have that beautiful picture in my head… and now I have yours to look at. Thanks!

    Although I appreciate the aesthetic qualities of this wonderful photo, I wouldn’t mind if I never saw a single sn*wflake again in my life (that’s what living in the snow belt for 18 years gets you!)

    Imagine my surprise to find your blog today and a picture of my backyard is the first thing I see! :)

    I live very near the Grand Tetons (they are in view from my front porch), and you did an excellent job of capturing the beauty we have here.

    Wonderful scene Gale! We recently had a ’sticky snow’ storm (on New Year’s Day) which was a real treat. Walking in the woods was like walking in some magical wonderland. I jokingly blogged a bit about it here;

    Your photos are simply extraordinary. So beautiful. However, I have to mention one small detail that I notice. When your photos are observed with a high quality display some of them look little too sharp. Personally I think that for examaple the winter wonderland is too sharpened. But please dont’t take this the wrong way. It is still a very beautiful photograph.

    I found your blog via Google blog search while searching for winter photography and your post regarding “Winter Wonderland In Yellowstone National Park” looks very interesting to me and it is also very creative. I have a few photography websites of my own and I must say that your blog is really good. Keep up the great work on a really high class resource.

    I really love winter photography and for most of us, even the thought of capturing on camera, a great shot of an idyllic winter scene is heartwarming and at the same time mind-numbingly depressing. We all know through bitter experience that a winter photography shot we thought of as perfect, might as well in fact be tossed in the garbage can. One really helpful trick that I learned for winter photography is to meter for something other than the snow. Think of all the photo opportunities we’re missing just by being unable to come to grips with proper exposure.
